5月12日，四川汶川发生了里氏7.8级大地震，至今死亡人数已经上升到14866人，被毁坏的房屋无数。面对自然灾害，中国人团结起来、互相帮扶，都希望能尽快将受灾的人们解救出来。我们也意识到，我们需要对地震多一些了解。
那么，“发生了地震”，该如何说呢？地震多属于突发事件，来势猛烈，去的也快，因此，英语中描述地震的动词也多具有这样的特点。比如用hit 和roll across两个词。Roll 表示“波动起伏地前进”，比如：

四川“地震”波及多省
国家地震台网测定，北京时间5月12日14时28分，四川汶川县发生7.8级地震。灾区临近的北川县死亡超3000人，截至13日19时，四川汶川县地震已造成四川、甘肃、陕西、重庆、云南、山西、贵州、湖北8省市共死亡12012人，9404人被废墟掩埋，7841人失踪。

在上述报道中，出现了一些跟地震（earthquake）相关的词汇
比如：tremor（A shaking or vibrating movement, as of the earth）就是“振动、颤动”的意思，earth tremor一般表示“轻微地震”。
magnitude（A measure of the amount of energy released by an earthquake, as indicated on the Richter Scale里氏震级中用以衡量地震强度的单位）就是“震级”，而epicenter（the point on the Earth's surface directly above the focus of an earthquake）指的就是“地震中心”或“震中”。
